NZCLE (TESOL)

New Zealand Certificate in Language Education (NZCLE)

This nationally recognised language teaching qualification is for those who are or want to be a language educator in New Zealand or overseas. Candidates will be proficient users of the target language, which may be English or any other language.

Teach English or your target language in New Zealand, China, Japan, Korea, Russia, or anywhere else. You’ll need this qualification to teach English and/or other languages.

This practical course aims to develop your ability to plan and deliver learner-centred lessons which respond to the language needs of learners. Build your confidence with teaching strategies and language analysis needed in the teaching context, and gain a theoretical background to your teaching methods.

Course Information

  • Programme Level: Level 5
  • Length: 20 weeks
  • Course Intakes: Feb / Jul
  • Class time: 9am - 3 pm, Monday - Thursday
  • Distance Learning Available: WIE is the only approved provider in the country to deliver this qualification online. Whilst the institute is based in Hamilton, lessons are conducted through real-time online conferencing from the comfort of your own space.

Entry Requirements

  • at least 18 years old
  • English Requirement:
    • Candidates who studied High School in NZ require at least NCEA level 2 English
    • Otherwise, IELTS Academic Score is 5.5, with no band lower than 5 or its equivalent
  • Target Language:
    • Demonstrate competence at Common European Framework of Reference C1 or above. (IELTS equivalent 6.5).
  • pass a safety check to complete the practicum component by the requirements of the Vulnerable Children Act 2014

Certification and Pathway

Upon successfully completing this course, you will have a nationally recognised qualification from NZQA and the experience to work in New Zealand in roles such as classroom language teacher, teacher aide, language assistant, online language teacher, or language trainer.
Graduates may also undertake further study towards qualifications in language teaching at Level 6 and above.
